The cantilever principle

A demonstration of the cantilever principle of the Firth of Forth Bridge (Great Britain, 1887).
The photo was taken for a lecture on the construction of the bridge at the Royal Institution.
The guy in the middle is Kaichi Watanabe, a Japanese who studied engineering in the UK.
The two men at the ends are the designers of the bridge, John Fowler and Benjamin Baker.
