I have gone to, toured and studied hundreds of public spaces, squares, courts, Parkettes, etc., in cities all over the world.
I’ve come across so many exceptional places for people that I have trouble remembering every one of them.
However, one stands out in my mind every time I think of the idea of a great public space, a place for people, And that’s Neal’s yard in London.
I discovered it many years ago on one of my early trips to London, and it has stood out to me as one of my favorite public spaces, ever. A place that I really look forward to visited every tour of London that I take.
It isn’t large and it isn’t really polished, it’s eclectic and even a little messy. But the scale of the overall space, the height of the buildings, the colors, the uses, the access, and the general feel of it is very dynamic, unique and special.
I’ve studied it extensively over the years, on my many visits, and I’ve learned a lot about what makes a great public space.
Neal’s Yard really illustrates how a place, where people want to be, to come, gather, relax and feel comfortable, can be created with some basic and simple elements.
