How much of Gaza is left standing?

I am deeply moved by UNOSAT’s satellite analysis (8 July 2025). 4 in 5 buildings in the Gaza Strip have been damaged since October 2023.

• 102,067 destroyed.
• 17,421 severely damaged.
• 41,895 moderately damaged.
• 31,429 possibly damaged.
282,904 housing units are now uninhabitable.
More than 1.9 million people remain displaced. Many lack safe shelter, food, medicine and dignity.
The global housing crisis, already affecting nearly 3 billion people, is worsening because of climate change and conflict.

UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) and UN Environment Programme, along with United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) imagery, contribute to regular debris assessments in the Gaza Strip.

The Economist’s data interactive, “How much of Gaza is left standing?” brings the numbers to life through mapping the devastation and revealing how entire neighbourhoods have vanished.
In Gaza, the scale of destruction makes immediate lifesaving support the absolute priority. We must act to protect lives, restore basic services and rebuild homes and neighbourhoods with speed and justice.
