A Bad System Will Beat a Good Person Every Time
Dr. W. Edwards Deming said it best: 94% of performance comes from the system, not the individual.
Yet when things go wrong, many leaders instinctively blame people instead of examining the environment they created.
Here’s the truth:
Your system—processes, tools, leadership, culture—is perfectly designed for the results you’re getting. If those results aren’t great, pushing harder won’t fix it. Redesigning the system will.
Great leadership means:
• Removing barriers to good work
• Designing stable, capable processes
• Equipping teams with the right tools
• Improving systems—not policing people
Next time something breaks, don’t ask “Who messed up?”
Ask “What in the system allowed this to happen?”
Own the system. Own the results. That’s real accountability.
