Do we own our Cities??

 

Abdulrhman Alsayel is an enthusiastic professional urban planner from KSA, who emphasis on the humane scale and interpretations of urban planning. I always follow his essays and insightful visions and work. Recently, he had raised a critical question, which truly would trigger lots of discussions. Yet, there are many limits for addressing the depth of the Participatory Democracy in urban processing at most of the developing countries.
I need to rephrase the question:
Do we own our Cities??

 

 These are some literature on the Urban Democracy:

"True urban democracy" refers to a city-based governance system where the principles of democracy—the "power of the people"—are fully realized and applied to urban contexts. This goes beyond merely hosting democratic institutions; it involves: 

1. 1. Inclusivity and Participation:

True urban democracy ensures all residents, regardless of background, have a meaningful voice and agency in decision-making processes that affect their city and daily lives.

2. 2. Equitable Access to Urban Life:

It requires democratic principles to be applied to the distribution of urban resources, opportunities, and amenities, ensuring that the city benefits all its inhabitants and not just a privileged few.

3. 3. Accountability and Responsive Governance:

Local governments and urban institutions are truly accountable to their citizens, responding to their needs and demands through open and transparent processes.

4. 4. Democratic Infrastructure:

Cities are not just a stage for politics but are designed and managed to foster democratic practices, with public spaces, civic engagement opportunities, and governance structures that facilitate broad participation and deliberation.

In essence, it's about creating cities where the inherent concentration of power and resources is harnessed for the benefit of all citizens, leading to a more just and democratic urban environment.

ناقشنا مع سموه ملفات عديدة حول مصير الأنسنة واتفقنا على السؤال – الذي يثير القلق والحماسة معًا – هو: 

هل تملك مدننا الشجاعة القيادية لتعيد الأنسنة إلى مقامها كـ إطار حضري شامل، أم سنكتفي بأن تبقى مجرد تحسينات تُزيّن الطرق لكنها لا تغيّر المصير؟
