All roads lead to Rome

All roads lead to Rome.

This timeless proverb reminds us of the sheer scale and brilliance of the Roman Empire. At its height, Rome built one of the most sophisticated road networks in the ancient world—stretching over 400,000 kilometers, with around 80,000 kilometers paved. These roads were more than infrastructure; they were the arteries of an empire, carrying armies, ideas, goods, and cultures across three continents.

The genius of Roman engineering wasn’t just in stone and mortar, but in vision. Roads radiated out from the heart of the empire, symbolized by the Milliarium Aureum (“Golden Milestone”) in the Roman Forum, from which distances were measured. They made Rome not just a capital, but a true center of the known world.

Note: this is a creative piece inspired by the proverb and not a literal claim that every road in Europe led to Rome.
